Andrew is a young man in his early 20's, the son of a co-worker. He has bttled with liver disease all of his life. He has been on and off the transplant list many times....here is the latest info fom his mom. Posted 12 hours ago Shortly after noon today Ann Arbor called that we were being considered as a secondary for a liver. They wanted us to be prepared and they wanted us to know that it was not a perfect liver. It tested possitive to being exposed to Hepatitis B. They explained that it is not a big risk but they will put him on an additional med to prevent it becoming an issue. We talked it over and decided to accept it if they called again. They called and we left within a half hour. He is checked in and they estimate the surgery to be 9pm. The liver is still 2 hours away. Doctors are off retrieving it. It still has not hit any of us because it was so unexpected. Andrew was joking on the way. He thinks he should have invested in Klenex before he left and was predicting that Grandma was on her third box. ![]() They have to do bloodwork yet but the doctor was satisfied that he was healthy so far. I will update tonight as we get news that the surgery is a go or no-go. Pray, Pray, Pray!!!!!!! Posted 9 hours ago They had Andrew all ready to go in the OR prep area and then we had to wait to get word on the Liver. While we waited many different Drs and nurses came over and talked football with Andrew. He had one request. That they keep him updated on the game. They were supposed to wisper in his ear while he was sleeping. The surgery will last an average of 8-9 hours. We were told by the others that his surgeon is the best. We met him during orientation and he is a really good guy. Now we are in the family waiting room and leaving it in God's hands. No amount of worry on our part can change anything at this point. We have the peace of knowing that he is in good hands. I pray that all will sleep well and check for an update in the morning. O come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! |

This is from Lynn- Andrew's Mom Getting some rest. Posted 6 hours ago We waited for the transplant team to do their rounds and then we left to get a hotel and take a nap and get a shower. We had to make sure the nurse would get him his ice chips on demand before we could leave. The team is VERY happy with how he is doing. He talks to us and makes sense. He talks mostly about the pain. When you think about how big a surgery this was you can understand that it would be extra painful. I tried to text a picture of his IV tower to facebook but I am not sure it worked. He has three IV pumps, one PCR pump for pain meds and 8 different IV bags hanging on the tree. He has an arterial line monitoring his cardiac output an abdominal drainage and urinary catheter that I can see. Who knows what else. They told us all this at orientation but it is still a surprise to see. The team called his Liver Grade A during round so they are very pleased with it. It is hard to comprehend that he has a piece of someone else inside of him. That someone else was a healthy 63 year old male that was about Andrews size. The Liver was turned down by other institutions due to the hep B exposure. It was then deemed the wrong size for others ahead of Andrew. Even though we were totally unprepared it was a great opportunity to get a Liver while still healthy. The hep B is not really an issue for us. Please include the donor family in your prayers, especially this close to Christmas. We do not have any idea of the circumstances of his death. Now for a little rest. Out of ICU Posted 11 hours ago(Thursday Evening) Andrew moved to a regular room today. They removed most of his IV's. He had one in the neck. There was one in the arm for blood products that was a 10 gauge(huge). He is down to one IV going in and one tube from his incision, as a drain, going out. Tonight he has been holding off using pain meds as much as possible. When he lays still he doesn't have much pain at all. The pharmacy came in and showed us a list of his meds to go home. There are quite a few. Most have to be specially ordered. We will be spending time as he recovers learning about them. We can't go home until we have a supply of them and know all about them. When Andrew arrived in his new room the nurses were commenting on his speedy recovery. As I was typing he informed me that he has not hit the pain med button since we got in this room 3 hours ago. He is now standing and walking around his bed. We are thanking God for all the great improvements today. Thanks for all the prayers and support. O come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! |

Yes...how is he doing?!
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:16-18NIV

Back to updates Newer update | Older update print friendlyDay 6 Posted 17 hours ago Andrew seems to have switched his days and nights. He was up getting milk from the nutrition room all night and eating the cereal I brought him. Then he took his first shower which wore him out. He was sleeping through the parade of people this morning. The nutritionist came in. I read that he should not drink well water and she confirmed that he should drink bottled water for at least 6 months. Also there was something about eggs. He has to have pastaurized eggs. So much for our nice fresh farm eggs. A food service person came and gave us a sheet on food interaction with drugs. He can't have any grapefruit products. Physical therapy came in twice but he was sleeping. A discharge planner came by. Doctors came in and once again talked about removing the drain. Earlier doctors said they were going to leave it in. The discharge planner said that some patients go home with a drain. We just had a nice talk with the social worker. They keep up on what support there is at home and how Andrew is feeling about everything. They will follow up at clinics as well. Andrew is now taking a quiz on what his meds do and when to call the doctor. Someone will be coming this afternoon to go over this with him. A busy day so far but Andrew is in good spirits and very receptive to the information. His background as a cook in a restaurant has taught him food safety so he will be schooling me on that. He even has to be careful around dirt because of the chance of bacterias in the ground. So much to think about but they do a great job on making sure you know what to expect. The hospital is getting really busy today. Some of the transplant team came to see him right after finishing a Liver Transplant this morning. They looked worn out. The nurses are saying that he will probably have someone in his room after surgery this afternoon. He is OK with that now. Thanks for all the prayers. O come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! |

Andrew's Updates Back to updates Newer update | Older update print friendlyDay 8 (Go Home) Posted 7 hours ago Everything looks like we will be going home today. The drain is out of his side and everything else is stable. It won't be until at least this afternoon. They won't be bringing his meds to us until 2:00 this afternoon. We will have to drive back already on Friday for clinic. He is a little nervous about the drives back and forth but is happy to be going home. Hopefully the next update will be from home. Please pray for safe travels with as few bumps as possible. O come, let us sing to the Lord;

Day 8 Home!!!!!! Posted 9 hours ago We have finally made it home. What a long day. We were pretty sure he was going home today but we were never completely counting on it. They said that his meds would not come until at least 2:00 this afternoon. The doctors have to put in his final orders and then they have to be shipped from somewhere. Well 2:00 came and went. His new nurse came on at 3:00 and said that if they do not come we have to stay tonight. We waited a couple more hours and the nurse told us they had been sent to the wrong place and someone was working on getting them. His discharge papers had been finished already at noon. We took Andrew with us to the cafeteria for supper. On the way back we passed the nurses station and saw her unpacking a box that had Andrew's name on it. Yes we nearly did a little dance in the hallway. After going through all the details of his meds and the long discharge we were finally on the way home. Andrew is settling in at home and ready to continue his recovery. We have an appointment for 9:45am on Friday to be back at clinic in Ann Arbor. Please pray for continued healing and good weather for driving to Ann Arbor.
O come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! |
